ABSTRACT
The chapter first investigates how these two physicians placed medicine within a pietistic epistemic hierarchy and how they understood the pietistic debates around seeking care or abstention from seeking cure and relying on God. It then examines how they understood the process of treatment within this pietistic cosmology, including understanding the materials prescribed or prohibited by the prophet and his companions and the potential conflicts between medical knowledge and the prophetic corpus.
