ABSTRACT

In the last few years China has made a remarkable political and economic comeback after the fiasco of the 1989 Tiananmen Square incident. All major countries, particularly East Asian, now court China. China's gross national product grew by 12 per cent in 1992 and 13 per cent in 1993. The attractiveness of the huge Chinese market, which has enormous potential, has given the Beijing leadership the sense that their country's international standing has been enhanced. 1
