ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how fieldwork can contribute to a student's development as a geographer. It discusses the benefits and challenges of fieldwork, reflects on its place in the curriculum, and considers the role of geography teachers in ensuring high quality fieldwork, and how, and why, different types of fieldwork can be utilised in geography education. The chapter aims to reflect on the role of fieldwork as a fundamental pillar of geography education. It considers how the geography teacher can utilise fieldwork when making the geography curriculum, and empower them to do so. The chapter explores the benefits of fieldwork to students in developing as geographers, both in regards to subject knowledge and skills, and also in their identity as geographers. It examines the arguments that exist for fieldwork playing an essential role in geography education, and the reasons why many of us often have such strong memories of it.
