ABSTRACT

The English interpretation of RB is embodied in Regularis Concordia (RC), a document formulated at the Council of English monks held at Winchester. In a general way it demonstrates how RB was received in England, how it was coloured by contemporary practice both in England and on the Continent, and how an attempt was made to establish an agreed practice for an English Congregation. The emphasis placed on general accretions to the liturgy in RC links the document more closely with the spirit of the Anianian reforms, and some of the most overt parallels between the two movements are literary. The influence of contemporary continental monasticism is equally pronounced, and the prologue to RC draws attention to the role of reformed continental monasticism in the compilation of the customary.
