ABSTRACT

The edge of the industrial district is the frontier where real-estate markets, urban design, and policy intersect. Member organizations of the Urban Manufacturing Alliance suggested additional cities. Other organizations with valuable resources include the Urban Land Institute, the Brookings Institution, and the National Association of Industrial and Office Parks. Because the case-study cities are all “manufacturing-aware cities,” the policy documents lead with a strong defense of urban production. While these irregular blocks sometimes reduce connectivity, they also help create the type of diverse and adaptable fabric that supports urban manufacturing, and the discontinuity with the surrounding neighborhoods can help define the edge of the district, as in the Newmarket. The edges of the urban industrial campus are of all kinds. For an industrial redevelopment project, such as Bathgate or a restored navy yard, the edges may be designed to be very discrete.
