ABSTRACT

This chapter starts by listing a few reasons why a project might be closed or put on hold before its successful completion. The project life cycle does not end for all the project stakeholders when the initial work is done and the project organization is disbanded. Formal project variation, modification, production permit and concession procedures are all part of this project definition process. All contract variations, modifications, engineering change requests, concessions, final inspection reports, test certificates and similar documents that help to define the final design status and quality of the project are filed and indexed. Traceability, back through all the inspection release tickets recorded in manufacturing files allows other batches of actuators made using that batch of stainless steel to be identified and replaced in all operational aircraft. This process of traceability, based on rigid recording of inspection release information related to each unit of manufacture, is required in other industries such as some military weapons and defense systems.
