ABSTRACT

Nonequilibrium plasmas are widely used in an already impressive range of technological applications, comprising cleaning, sterilization, or decontamination of surfaces; their patterning or functioning; deposition of protective or decorative coatings; and modication of surfaces for improvement of their bioresponsive properties or as sources of radiation. There are several reasons for this-plasma-based methods are relatively simple and cost effective, they overcome the need of wet chemistry with all the consequences related, for instance, to the safety and environmental aspects, and last, but not least, enable to deposit coatings on a wide range of substrate materials. The main intention of this chapter is to show that plasma technologies are of high interest also in the eld of production of food packaging materials.
