ABSTRACT

In “Play, Devising, and the Creative Process,” Brian Rhinehart asks the question: “How does one establish an atmosphere, space, and process for creativity to take place?” He suggests that through the inclusive and communal process of “devising,” actors can let go of their inhibitions, be courageous, trust their imaginations, and thereby share in the collective excitement and creative satisfaction that comes from a group of people creating a work of art from nothing. He illustrates this with an account of his devised production Dispersal in Germany and the United States, from conception, research, rehearsals, to performance.
