ABSTRACT

There is a particular category of jokes that are primarily about language. Most of these point directly to a perceived absurdity in what we think we know about language. Some of these are funnier than others: there are vast collections of jokes on the Internet about what a strange language English is. However, many of these are not jokes as much as they are simply pithy little remarks pointing out the absurdities of English. The best of these are found in the writings of Richard Lederer (1989, and too many to reference).
