ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I show what kinds of knowledge are required in solving cryptic crossword puzzles. In solving cryptic crosswords the aim is to find all sorts of connections—working not only with the content of the obvious sense of the clue—but with the connections between words and letters; words and their synonyms, homonyms, metonyms; words and their spelling; words and their sounds; words with other words in a string; words and their sense; and words and their reference. 1
