ABSTRACT
Modern pluralism started out as a reaction to the concentration of sovereignty in the nation state. Its exponents argued that ‘intermediate institutions’ such as churches, universities and professional or economic organizations ought not to be regarded as dependent upon the will of a sovereign authority, but should enjoy a degree of rightful autonomy.
