ABSTRACT

Some plural nouns have no markers of the plural at all. There are various different types, and there is a lot of variation as to whether regular plurals co-exist with the unmarked plural. Words which refer to sets of individuals may not take a plural marker but take plural concord. Animals which are hunted for commercial exploitation often have unmarked plurals, especially words like antelope, bison, mink, moose. The word fish itself is usually found with an unmarked plural, but can have a regular plural in circumstances which are not clear. When fish is the second element in a compound the unmarked plural is particularly likely, especially if these species are regarded as commercial catch. The word dice is usually treated as either singular or plural, but there is an old-fashioned usage whereby the singular is die. English has borrowed a series of plural markers from other languages.
