ABSTRACT

Transit traffic through Polish ports was always of considerable significance to the Polish maritime sector as Poland was conveniently located with a long Baltic coastline, and bordered by two friendly, socialist countries - Hungary and Czechoslovakia - and one non-CMEA country - Austria, each of which was landlocked. Polish ports were also ice-free all year (unlike many Soviet Baltic ports) and thus attracted some USSR traffic, and even provided transit opportunities for cargo from Romania and Bulgaria which was destined for other Baltic countries.
