ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the engagement of the Indian youth with mainstream politics. This includes interest in politics, voting in elections, party identification and participation in electoral and non-electoral political activities. It explores the reasons which drive them to take part in politics. The chapter maps the youth’s attitudes and perceptions towards contemporary political issues and their position on these issues. It is observed that youth is not a homogenous political category; various socio-economic factors shape their attitudes and perception towards politics and motivate them to take part in political activities. Using data from various past surveys/studies, the chapter compares present political engagement and political attitudes of Indian youth with the past.
