Following the first round matches of the 1978 World Cup, the Argentine magazine

described the Peruvian team’s midfield players (César Cueto, Teófilo Cubillas and José Velásquez of the Alianza Lima team) as the best in the world. The blue-and-white-shirted Alianza team had won the national championship that year for the second year in a row. Subsequently, however, the team had had a barren spell that seemed never-ending. Indeed, 18 years went by before the Alianza Lima team was able to relieve the suffering of its fans by winning the national championship in 1997.
