ABSTRACT

This chapter makes use of the literature associated with studies of 'post-democracy' on the relationship among political space, electoral politics and the fate of democracy to assess the relationship between business and civil society. The successful businessification of the state means that civil society is faced by a two-pronged effort, by state and business, to businessify the organizations of civil society. Civil society and its groups had also played significant political roles in supporting democratization in South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines and Thailand. In making an argument about the struggle for civil society, the chapter develops and extends positions developed in the broad 'post-democracy school'. While political space, civil society and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), it emphasizes the roles and activities of NGOs, community-based organizations (CBOs) and civil society organizations (CSOs) as significant both for theoretical reasons and for their on-the-ground activities in political space.
