ABSTRACT

Latinxs have only begun to have a significant influence on the political landscape of the United States (US). Voter apathy among Latinxs has traditionally been high, perhaps because Latinxs have not seen themselves reflected in either the politicians or the issues deemed important by the politicians running or in office. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 finally made the process of voting more accessible to Latinxs, and it is that the slow but increased engagement in the US political process began for Latinxs. Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta also became involved in other political issues concerning Latinxs, including immigration, the Bracero program, and they became community organizers for politicians who aligned with Latinx issues. Despite the dominance of Democrats among Latinxs, the other side of the political spectrum in the US has a significant group of Latinxs. In terms of politicians, there is a long but lean history of Latinxs in elected office at the national level.
