ABSTRACT

Many analysts have seen the Occupy movements of the past decade with their stress on direct democracy as reflecting a crisis of representational democracy but without long-term effects. In order to evaluate the impact of such movements, this chapter examines the 2016 occupation of La Place de la République in Paris and follows subsequent political mobilizations such as the emergence of a new progressive party and the development of a virtual cooperative among delivery workers. The chapter suggests that the 2016 occupation in France contributed to the emergence of a new progressive party, the development of innovative cross-national and horizontalist interventions among precarious workers previously dependent on employer-controlled online apps, and possibly the reconfiguration and rescaling of a political bloc.
