ABSTRACT

The land and agriculture would be restored to their traditional central place in the life of Britain, the nation’s wealth be built up, unemployment reduced, and some at least of the pressing problems of civilization automatically solved. Everyone appreciates the magnificent energy that has inspired action since Mr. Hudson became Minister of Agriculture. His general line of policy has had a remarkable success, and it would be graceless to criticize details ; for, after all we are in the midst of the greatest war that the world has seen, and we are concerned with the essential daily problem of feeding the people. The reaction that follows all wars may then have gripped us, and if we can be guided by what happened after the last war, there will be a swing back to the Victorian outlook, with its over-emphasis on foreign trade and under-emphasis of the primary importance of agriculture to civilization.
