ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the untranslatability — but even more about the unrealized positive implications — of the powerful and rich educational historical word Bildung. Education is uddannelse, and Bildung in Danish is dannelse. So, in these two languages, in these two European languages, one has the Bildung aspect inscribed in the word for education as a memorable and important part. This chapter presents different interpretations of this multi-faceted and highly contested Bildung concept in an attempt to revitalize it. Bildung is going on everywhere, in social media, playground activities, in youth culture groups, neo-tribes, etc. To be able to take part in the political and societal life, Bildung is indispensable, and it implies that one sees himself as becoming an active and critical thinking citizen. Bildung can be rescued and transformed to become a critical concept.
