ABSTRACT

During the survey of churches in the diocese of Llandaff carried out as part of Cadw’s Welsh Historic Churches Survey, it became clear that a significant number of churches had undergone modification or reconstruction in the post-medieval period, before the major rebuilding phase of the 19th century. The extent of this work has been consistently underestimated in the past, but the examination of architectural features associated with date-stones shows that there was a strong vernacular tradition in which stylistic features usually associated with 16th-century architecture continued in use in churches past the middle of the 18th century.
