ABSTRACT

Gambling is a long-standing and persistent cultural practice that has endured through changes in social norms, regulations and attitudes towards risk-taking. Gambling has also survived and developed through media changes. Poker was first played with hand-painted cards, which were then printed and are now digital. Slot machines first produced random events with mechanical reels, which became electronic and then fully digital. The cultural logic of gambling, moreover, has influenced other spheres of contemporary life, such as stock trading, a practice that shapes global financial systems. The cultural logic of gamble-play is evident in emerging digital products, such as casual stock trading apps, discussed in the last chapter of this book.
