The pottery industry consists of four quite different parts which overlap hardly at all. They are: domestic pottery, tiles, sanitary ware and electrical porcelain. This chapter presents the results of a market study of the determination of the exports of the domestic pottery industry over the period 1958-65, using quarterly data. It investigates two major overseas markets: the United States and Canada and United Kingdom exports. The chapter comprises a statistical and econometric study of the home and export sales which were obtained from most of the firms which were interviewed and examines the evidence at firm level for the pressure of demand hypothesis. It describes the results of an econometric analysis of the pressure of demand effect on the industry's exports and concludes with a brief discussion of the results of the interviews with firms in the tiles and sanitary ware sectors of the pottery industry.
