ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with the contribution of development economics to the analysis of poverty and inequality. The discussion relates both to conceptual contributions as well as contributions to policy/strategy and to indicators of poverty and inequality. It is argued that contemporary development economists have been at the forefront in the evolution of thinking on poverty and inequality. Indeed, in many senses development economists have led development studies away from approaches that are primarily economic while still emphasising the significance of the economic dimension of poverty analysis.
