ABSTRACT
Since praise poetry is historically an oral genre, it remained unwritten until the arrival of missionaries and colonial settlers. It is for this reason that, as attested to by records left by these people in former British colonies, the praises of those native peoples who came into contact with the West first have the longest and most varied historiography.
