ABSTRACT

A summary of breeding and research events following the implementation of a pre-harvest sprouting screening program in 1979 is presented. Production areas subject to conditions favoring sprouting and problems encountered in breeding wheat for these areas are outlined. Relatively warm ripening conditions present a major challenge for breeders wishing to safeguard varieties from weather damage. There is a need for identification and utilization of components of sprouting resistance, apart from dormancy. High alpha-amylase activities in specific varieties not subjected to rainy pre-harvest conditions are presented.
