ABSTRACT

Adult males still comprise the majority of members of athletic teams, and it is this population that has been the focus of most sports medicine research. Children and adolescents demonstrate significant differences from the adult male, and so, while most of the principles in the rest of this volume also apply to young athletes, this chapter will emphasize issues specific to this group. Team physicians caring for young athletes should be aware of differences, not only in injury patterns and management, but also in training response, training safety, and therefore injury prevention.
