ABSTRACT

This chapter examines issues facing the organisation of pre-retirement education (PRE). PRE is an international phenomenon, with organisations devoted to pre-retirement planning existing in many countries. The Pre-Retirement Association of Great Britain and Northern Ireland was founded in 1964, with the aim of stimulating both new regional and local associations, together with advocacy of employer and trade union responsibility for PRE. F. Glamser concluded that the impact of pre-retirement courses may be of short duration, with their primary value coming in the preretirement phase. More fundamentally, Charles was to question whether altered statements on questionnaires really did represent a change in behaviour. One important feature is the range of initiatives currently supporting work in PRE. A counselling element in PRE must, therefore, assume greater importance than has so far been the case. A major area for debate concerns the future structure and content of pre-retirement programmes.
