ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses illustrative issues on Primary Teacher Education in Physical Education (P-TEPE). It presents the major historical discourses within teacher education. The chapter also provides an account of the main conceptual orientations on preservice teacher education. It discusses the status of primary physical education in schools. Primary physical education has an important role in the school curriculum because it can contribute to the development of students' fundamental motor skills and physical competences and support the development of social, cognitive, and affective skills and behaviours. The chapter also presents an account of the major lines of research P-TEPE. It also discusses the major characteristics of quality teacher education programs. The establishment of several reform agendas and initiatives for teacher education around the world highlights both the emerging areas of concerns and the range of developments in teacher education programs. The chapter provides recommendations for further research.
