ABSTRACT
The Bible has often been cited as the source of some of the principles which have guided the behaviour and attitudes of both (Jewish) Israelis and (Muslim and Christian) Arabs in their twentieth-century political struggle. 'An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth' (Deut. 19:21), for example, has become a motto justifying a vicious cycle of attacks and retaliations. 1
