ABSTRACT
It is a striking feature that the size of is lands generally declines eastwards through the re gion. Hence the continental extent of Australia and the major island of New Guinea are succeeded east wards by New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands and then Fiji, and finally the tiny atolls of most of French Polynesia.
