ABSTRACT

“The sacred” is defined as a human experience without need for religious or supernatural overlay. First, it is seen as a letting down of defenses and intimate sharing of vulnerabilities and connection between group members. Second, it is the group holding the potential for each group member that they might come more fully into their own authentic power and authority. The group is seen as a “Thou” in an I–Thou relationship with each group member. Several cases that illustrate the ineffable qualities described as “The Sacred” are discussed.
