ABSTRACT
Adrine Santos, who is another friend of Marisa, wrote this rather sad reflection: When she was young she used to resent that her father was so insistent with us, forcing us to only speak Spanish in our home. Back then she did not understand that he was doing it as a way of helping us preserve our first language/culture. We have talked in the book about some obvious ways of preserving and sharing culture and language in classrooms and settings by displaying different scripts and alphabets, introducing materials from the cultures of the children, inviting in speakers of the languages of the group and more, but she want to turn now to something that amazed and entranced her when she came across a chapter called 'The Pen Talks My Story', written by Susan Harrop-Allin, new book on multimodal approaches to teaching and learning. The telling of a story using what is at hand becomes an incredibly complex cognitive act.
