ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a summary of the objectives, sample design, and survey methodology of the national survey of lead-based paint in housing, conducted by Westat, Inc., under contract to Housing and Urban Development (HUD). It presents the plan for the analysis of the association between lead in dust and soil and lead-based paint. Department of HUD to develop comprehensive and workable plans for the cost-effective inspection and abatement of lead-based paint in privately owned housing and public housing. In response, HUD sponsored a national survey of lead-based paint in housing. Approximate design effects were calculated for the national survey of lead-based paint in housing, and for selected subsets of the sample. The national survey of lead-based paint in housing produced a database with copious information on the incidence and characteristics of lead-based paint in housing, and its association with lead in dust and soil.
