This chapter highlights the recent emergence of postsecondary institutions' hazing policies in response to highly publicized campus incidents. Reactive policy is developed in response to a concern, problem, or emergency. It is designed to remedy problems that already exist. Proactive policy is deliberately chosen and often designed to prevent a concern, problem, or emergency from occurring. Preventive and proactive approaches aim to prevent hazing from happening. In the past 15 years, several colleges and universities have developed stronger hazing policies to address the ongoing and evolving issue of hazing. Many of the new and emerging edits to university hazing policies have been reactionary to address highly publicized hazing allegations. The chapter highlights few cases in order to address the process of how postsecondary institutions continue to develop and implement hazing policies. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has an entire website dedicated to hazing, with a similar breadth of information as is available on the UMass website and more.
