ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the integers Z, zeroing in on prime numbers. The set of prime numbers has fascinated mathematicians throughout history. Early mathematicians may have viewed 1 as being prime, but once we discuss the theory of unique factorization of integers, we will see why it is important not to count 1 as being prime. Once we have traversed the entire list, we then return to the beginning of the list and look for the first number that has not been selected as a prime already and that has not been crossed out.
