ABSTRACT

The Trust’s open-ended guidelines have helped enable Fred G. Meyer to weave an authentic commitment to equity into the fabric of the foundation. Private foundations are typically entities that may have been started by an individual or family, but are largely governed by non-family members. On the surface, one might assume the Trust is a family foundation. It was created in 1982 by an individual after whom the organization is named. Although the founder is not living, one might assume his heirs would be the majority of Board members. The current mission of the Trust, and the foundation’s emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion represented a change in direction, which was further refined in 2016. Meyer’s commitment to equity and inclusion is most pronounced in the foundation’s internal systems, operations, policies, procedures, and composition. Clearly, the foundation has progressed along its equity journey in how it appears and how it behaves culturally.
