ABSTRACT

Education in the United States, especially in urban settings, is changing dramatically. The need for an educated citizenry is changing even more. Currently, with few exceptions, schools within urban systems are producing workers for jobs that no longer exist, in which following orders, reading minimally, and recalling a few facts would be considered enough. Instead, the 21st-century workplace requires individuals who can think critically, read with the ability to understand and respond appropriately and purposively to a wide variety of texts, collaborate with others, be creative, solve problems flexibly, and be resilient.
