Even when the events of an experiment involve numbers, it may be necessary to convert these numbers to new values which are more easily analyzed. For example, when a pair of fair dice are tossed, the fundamental event is the pair of faces facing upward when the dice come to rest. The original sample space

is then made up of pairs of numbers. It is convenient to convert these pairs into single number values. If the numbers on the faces of each pair are summed, a single number is obtained. The set of these numbers is the range space R. This process is shown in Table 8.2.
