ABSTRACT

One aspect of probability and statistics concentrates on accurately summarising and

describing patterns in an individual data sample. Another more common aspect is

to use a data sample to make general inferences about the underlying population it

has been taken from. For example, a group of university students might be surveyed

about the amount and type of beer they consume on a weekly basis. The aim of this

study might be to infer results about the student body as a whole; for example,

whether some types of students drink more than others or whether university

students consider brand X beer to be trendy. These inferences might be useful to a

brewery that wants to improve flagging sales of brand X beer.
