ABSTRACT
The punishment of crime can take many forms, ranging from financial penalties through the death penalty. It is possible to classify criminal sanctions into at least four major categories of penalties: financial, bodily, custodial, and noncustodial (Reichel 2005). Of all penalties, financial sanctions are probably the most common, in part because they are assigned to the most common but least serious offenses, such as traffic law violations. After financial penalties, the second most common form of criminal sanctions, and the most common for serious offenses, are noncustodial penalties.
