ABSTRACT

Probiotics are known to have benefi cial effects on their hosts once consumed, and many investigations have examined the application of probiotics in a medical context. The diseases targeted by probiotic therapy were mainly infectious diseases such as Clostridium diffi cile infection (antibiotic-associated diarrhea:AAD, pseudomembranous colitis:PMC), rotavirus infection, traveler’s diarrhea, etc. In addition to intestinal infections, other studies have also reported positive clinical effects in a broad range of infectious diseases including opportunistic infection, postoperative infection, urinary tract infection and respiratory tract infection (Gerritsen et al. 2011, Quigley 2010).
