ABSTRACT

Tribology is involved in both industrial and basic scienti c researches. In industry, tribological considerations arise in all requirements and applications relating to the control of friction and wear in mechanical components. This domain includes extension of the lifetime of components, increase in their mechanical and energy ef ciency, and improvement in their safety in, for example, the transportation, chemical, textile, food, plastic, biomedical, and space industries. The widespread application of tribology in industry is evident in a wide variety of situations. Historically, the optimization of contact geometries and the choice of bulk materials and lubricants have been the main technological thrusts in the design of speci c remedies for industrial applications.
