ABSTRACT

The graying of America is resulting in more and more free-living Americans who are retired from the workforce. This group has the most resources to spend and the most leisure time. Although the majority of the elderly (over age 55) are healthy and living in private homes or apartments, increasing numbers are feeling financial strictures because inflation has outstripped many retirement plans. The presence of many chronic forms of illness along with diminished physical capacity is widespread, placing financial and emotional burdens that are often poorly met by local social and medical programs. The elderly use the most prescription medications and the most over-the-counter drugs. It is little wonder that there is an increasing recognition of problems of drug abuse and alcoholism in older subjects.
