ABSTRACT

American science excels in designing tailfins of all sorts — in diligently working out new touches, new details or convolutions of an already given body, be it the body of a car or of a theory. Some of the unpleasant and dangerous aspects of American life and society patently have their roots in education. One aspect of educational philosophy which should be reexamined is the value of the human individual, together with its opposite, the theory that all individuals have equal capabilities and intelligence. Since Sputnik-I was launched, there has been an enormous debate in American education, science, and research. With a gigantic increase in research and development budgets, there has still been no change in attitude or any reassessment of basic outlook. The existence of hereditary differences, perfectly trivial to the biologist, appears to come as a revolutionary surprise to American psychologists.
