ABSTRACT

A clinical supervisor who provides supervision services under the aegis of one of the major codes of ethics should carefully study all of the standards in her or his respective code. One common commitment in all major codes of professional ethics for mental health care providers requires that those who serve within the constraints of these ethics function within the boundaries of their individual competence. A discussion of professional ethics includes giving attention to specific standards and obligations of mental health care providers. The emerging status of clinical supervision suggests that the ethical standards may be emerging, too, and similarly lack consistency and therefore reliability. Despite the clear and high standards for clinical supervisors, approximately one-half of clinical supervisors fail to comply with these standards. Their vulnerability stems from several professional issues that arise in clinical supervision.
