ABSTRACT

SUMMARY. Accurate assessment of physiological indices of job stress is necessary in order to help us identify individuals most susceptible to stress-related ailments such as cardiovascular disease. The physiological indicators examined, blood pressure and heart rate, catecholamines, Cortisol and lipids have all evidenced a relationship to physical and psychological stressors. Assessment of these indicators must address the difficulties involved in doing such studies. Individual differences in responding, the specifics of each physiological process, and the constraints of doing such research in the natural setting must be considered. Only if strict attention is paid to the myriad of processes influencing the variables under study is accurate assessment possible.
