ABSTRACT
Recent developments in semiconductor technology indicate that, unless fundamental breakthroughs are made, we can no longer expect a steady exponential growth in the processors’ clock frequency. Thus, in order to sustain the rate of performance improvement of the last several decades, we must increase the average number of instructions that are executed in parallel.
