ABSTRACT

As internal communicators, we are often involved in supporting change. Delivering effective change starts with good project management. The Association for Project Management, the chartered body for the project profession, defines it as follows: A project is a unique, transient endeavour, undertaken to achieve planned objectives, which could be defined in terms of outputs, outcomes or benefits. Projects have a number of characteristics that can be expressed through the iron triangle of project management: time, cost and quality/scope. Every project needs a business case. A business case sets out the problem or opportunity, analyses the options, and recommends a way forward. The sponsor can be a great asset to communicators in helping with stakeholder relationships. Management of a project involves breaking it down into its individual components or work packages. Larger projects and programmes may have a change control board which considers any requests for change, or it may be the responsibility of the project manager.
