ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the projects where the project team members and stakeholders are geographically dispersed. Virtual projects have increased in number dramatically over the last decade owing to many global trends. Project meetings and communication will be devoid of body language and need to use technology instead to allow interaction between team members. As with face-to-face project teams, the initial project kick-off provides a great opportunity to set the project team up for success. Virtual projects are now a fundamental way of getting things done for many project managers. But many virtual project teams are badly set up and their virtual meetings are dismal affairs. Project team members take action as a result of the commitment that they have to the project and the rest of the project team. It is more difficult to build trust virtually. Lack of action can destroy what little trust has been built up and lead to a vicious cycle.
